The History of VBC
On April 27, 1816, seven months before Indiana was to become a state and before Vernon was incorporated as a town, the Vernon Baptist Church was formed by seven individuals. These Vernon residents had tired of the forty-mile round trip to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church near Madison.
The church first met in homes of members or outdoors. In 1824, the church received the present site by donation. This spot is the highest point in Vernon, overlooking the town and the Muscatatuck Valley.
The first meetinghouse built on site is pictured drawn by past church member Kay Brown.
At the end of 1823, the church had received 180 members, but in the next 21 years gave up enough members to form five new churches leaving 53 members.
The old church minutes reveal a hardiness in the baptism candidates. Men and women alike were taken to the Muscatatuck River immediately after the service. If the river was frozen, church boys were sent ahead to break away the ice.
In 1871, the square building was razed and our present one built. While without a home, our church met in the courthouse.  Around this time, our pastors were students from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. This practice continued until the 1980s.
In 1975, the Education/Office Wing was added to the church. With this construction, four Sunday School rooms and two offices were added. In 1984, the church installed air conditioning for the first time. In 2001, construction was completed on our Family Life Center located behind the church building.
Today in Vernon Baptist Church, descendents of our first families still work faithfully alongside the newest additions to the church. All believe that combination of old and new blood blesses them with a special strength and vitality for serving the Lord.
Over the last 200+ years, God truly has blessed Vernon Baptist Church and it is still our prayer to honor and glorify His name.

Communion

Communion is a sacred time for us to remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the new life we have through Him. As we share the bread and the cup, we reflect on His body given for us and His blood shed for the forgiveness of sins. It’s a time of worship, gratitude, and unity as the body of Christ.

We celebrate communion together on the first Sunday of every month, and all believers are welcome to join us.

“And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood." Luke 22:19–20
